Polling was extended until midnight in the town of Barnstable on Tuesday after election workers were unable to access ballots trapped in a locked vault, which would not open as the state primary elections got underway.Barnstable officials said employees in the town clerk's office tried around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning to enter a vault used to store ballots ahead of the election. The vault would not open, they said, delaying the delivery of ballots to polling locations across the town.Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin blamed a mechanical issue in the vault.
