Sheriff James Cumming is retiring after 23 years in office, and two candidates are vying to replace him. The Republican candidate is Timothy Whelan from Brewster, currently state Rep. from the 1st Barnstable District. The Democratic candidate is Donna Buckley from Falmouth and currently General Counsel to the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office.The Barnstable County Sheriff's Office is one of seven county sheriff's offices in the state. The BCSO has 325 employees and includes a jail, house of correction and communications center in Bourne.
